I use this Bukkit Plugin to protect the world and your claims.
dev.bukkit.org/bukkit-plugins/grief-prevention/
This plugin is configured to the most strict settings. Players are given 400 blocks to claim land with. The smallest size you can have is 10x10 so you can configure your 400 blocks to be any where from 4 10x10 plots or 1 10x40 plot or what I would recommend is a 20x20. The tools needed to interact with grief prevention are a wooden shovel and a stick.
Wood Shovel - Right click on an unclaimed area to mark your first point. then right click again on another block to mark the opposing corner of that block to claim your square or rectangular land. once you have land you can make it bigger by right clicking on the corner and extending it in the direction you would like your property to extend to.
Stick - The stick is uses to gather info on claims. you can right click a stick to find out who owns land or if its even owned at all.
Protection of your land
Hero commands:
Your land is completely protected from all players with 1 exception. You can be sieged! Players are unable to interact with your claim except open doors and look around. Your chests and switches are all locked. With the /trust command you can give some one permission to build on your land. There are other trust commands like /containertrust that give players permissions to open chests but not move blocks. Players are also able to /subdivideclaims to allow particular access to one area of a claim. For instance giving some one permission to open up a shop in your town. you can subdivide the claim and give them permission in that small area. Subdividedclaims only extend down a few blocks.
Sieges
Hero command: /Siege
you can /Siege some one else. At this point nether of you are able to log out or run far away. you are able to destroy blocks during a siege. This feature will be disable near the launch of "The God's Land"
Buy Claim blocks
Hero command: /buyclaimblocks
In order to claim land you need to buy claim blocks. Each player as I said starts with 400 claim blocks. Currently claim blocks are 20 coins each.[/ul]
